About

I am a 3rd generation mixed race adoptee - a Black European-American photographer based in Colorado. From an early age, my adoption social worker described me as curious and gregarious - she was right. I have traveled all over North America with my truck and self-built tiny house, enjoying documenting adventure and learning to look inward. In many ways, I have always taken my own road, acquiring a phd in engineering by age 26, working as an Alaskan heli-ski guide and living on an off-grid wildlife refuge in the mountains of Colorado to name a few stops along the way. In my photography, wild landscapes are my speciality. As a child I was drawn to such spaces as they felt safe to contain my complex emotions that I often hid during childhood surrounding the complicated nature of my relinquishment and adoption - grief, confusion, unbelonging and despair to name a few. These spaces also inspire joy, freedom and excitement!

I am grateful to have been brought to tears by the Canadian Rockies at an early age, helping to identify the healing power of nature and instilling in me a love for stunning natural beauty. Capturing the raw immensity and powerful drama of the wild are among my focuses. I often travel by foot, kayak, snowmobile, motorcycle, swim or ski to reach remote landscapes, enjoying the physical nature of moving in the wild. My process starts with the adventure of exploring wild places, often alone and for extended periods of time. The physical journey and silence within these spaces awakens buried emotions, sensations and memories allowing for healing and a progression towards wholeness within myself and nature. I am on a quest, one to recreate my recurring childhood dreams of searching for who I am and where I came from. Dreams that repeatedly required traversing alone as a child, deeper and deeper into a variety of wildernesses, searching for something unknown to me.

As I have awoken to my own story in life, my work aims to bring these dreams to reality. My work and the physical journey involved in capturing these raw moments in the wild are an attempt to inspire viewers and their own agency to heal. In many ways, the childhood dreams represent traversing into one’s own depths, with curiosity and compassion, exploring a wild, potentially dangerous, yet authentic and truly majestic space with unparalleled wisdom. I see the world as one large emotional beast, which is a stage for reflecting the depths of our own emotional journeys. Raw nature cannot judge, it is both the perfect therapist and storyteller, teacher of greater meaning, magic, and manhood. In this quest, I will traverse the sea to sky, understanding what I must and letting mystery unfold. Only treading when I need to feel the familiar abyss from which I came. Only soaring when winds allow - balanced in this great round home. Safe and secure - I am child of this universe. I am on my lonely journey in this reality as I have dreamed before. The least I can do is capture my experience as I have felt it, to heal and grow, and inspire others to do the same through my work.
