Divided Wild is an image I created out of my ‘backyard’ in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Motorcycling directly from my cabin on a fall day, I zoomed up in elevation passing the changing aspens with golden glistening leaves and crested out above treeline - stopping just short of the wilderness boundary. Then climbed by foot through the alpine tundra with rust colored foliage leading into the barren rock scree of the high alpine. I summited ‘James Peak’ in the late afternoon, breathing heavy at 13,300 ft overlooking the surrounding peaks. The land here is the traditional homelands of the Nuuchu (Ute), Hinono’ei (Arapaho) and Tsistsistas (Cheyenne) peoples and known in modern day as the Colorado Front Range - a portion of Continental Divide. Spanning three distinct wilderness zones: James Peak Wilderness, Indian Peak Wilderness and Rocky Mountain National Park. The iconic 14k ft, Long’s Peak (Neníisótoyóú’u) towers in the distance, as a beam of light breaks through the clouds illuminating its summit block. This image inspires the eye to evaluate the detailed complexity of the intensely rocky and layered terrain with a seemingly never ending ridge system. The land emanates a sense of lostness and impassability. I find myself searching for traversable routes, while becoming wrapped up by the deep shadowed valleys, wondering what each one may contain in its own vastness.
